Slow life: how and why to do it as a family

Contents

The idea of slow life gains ground every year. We live at a pace faster than we can take in — running for the metro, running for the bus, running to the shops. The sense of immediacy never lets up: running to answer a message, running to reply to an email. Nothing that takes any length of time gets our attention. Not even on holiday: running from one monument to the next to take the photo, and then running to post it.

Not heard of it? Then you may need it more than most. Today, at GoRandom we want to go through what a slow life is and what it does for a family.

First: what is slow life?

The slow philosophy started some years ago with slow food, which argued for going back to the food of each place as an answer to the spread of fast-food chains. From there it widened into other areas of life, and became slow life.

The argument is that we need to slow the week down and give ourselves time to think, breathe and be quiet — all of it to lower the pace, keep stress at a distance and get more out of life. Which seems worth fighting for.

Why do it as a family?

A way of living that helps you appreciate the week is good for you and for the people around you — and it matters most for children. If adults are dragged along by stress, the txikis feel it more. They need tools for coping with the coming and going, and for handling their own anxiety.

How to start

As with any change of habit it has to come gradually, so that it settles rather than gets abandoned at the first difficulty. Go back to enjoying the outdoors and the company of the people you love; understand that our time here is short, and that everything we do shapes the present and leaves a mark on what comes after. Learn, and teach, how to enjoy water, the countryside, snow, good company. And it never hurts to find something that helps you relax — mindfulness among them.

At GoRandom we want to take the stress of organising out of your hands so that you can concentrate on the day itself. It is as simple as going to gorandom.es, picking the level that suits you — Yellow, Orange or Red — choosing a day and a time, and trusting us with the rest.

We work with people who will show you what a slow life feels like, and that any activity can be done at a pace that lets you enjoy it.

Will that be the surprise waiting for you?
