A bit more about surfing
Did you know the idea of waxing a surfboard came from a surfer’s mother?
Surfers, to stop themselves slipping and to catch waves better, coat the top of the board in wax. The idea came to a boy watching his mother wax the floor at home. He noticed she was not slipping, put some on his board, and never slipped again.
Another one: we see surfers riding waves and assume that is what surfing is. Watch them from the moment they paddle out to the moment they come in and you find that they are actually riding for about 8% of the time. Around 54% is spent paddling, and the rest waiting for the right wave.
Finally, the website of the Spanish Surfing Federation (FES) has the latest news about a sport that has been an Olympic sport since 2010. The competition calendars and the advice on their blog are useful too, and there is information on licences and insurance and on related sports such as paddleboarding.
