Winter in the Basque Country
Winter is nearly here, and even if it has not officially arrived you can feel it in the weather, which has turned considerably colder over the past few weeks. Which puts a good many activities out of reach.
As the temperature drops, we have to rethink what to do with our free time. Worse weather is no reason to stop or to do nothing. Some of you will already have things to do at home planned and that is entertainment enough; but for those who want something different with friends or family, here are some winter plans for the Basque Country.
What winter is like here
Through winter here the weather is cold, with the low temperatures of the season mixed with cloudy or wet spells and the occasional sunny day. That usually lasts well into spring.
As we said, none of that means staying indoors. On the contrary: rain, or snow, transforms the country here and gives it something we happen to like a great deal.
Winter is a chance to be outdoors in a different way — warmly dressed, obviously. It is the right season for things summer does not allow.
We would encourage you to make the most of winter in the Basque Country and of what it allows. Which will it be? Book your next activity.
What to do in winter in the Basque Country
The answer depends on what you like, but there will be something for you in the list below.
Here they are.
For anyone who feels the cold
First, the indoor ones — an Escape room. There you spend an hour or so working through the puzzles and challenges they set you. Some are simple enough to solve alone; others need the whole team if you want to get out in time.
Another good one is a game of laser tag. Your heart rate goes considerably higher here, because you have to stay alert. You can play everyone against everyone, in teams, or capture the flag. Our favourite is capture the flag, because it is not only about eliminating the other side: there is a mission, and it takes both skill and teamwork to win. Quite an experience.
And last of the indoor ones, virtual reality. If you like video games, this is yours. There is no end to it: you can play shooters, strategy games, simulations on foot or in vehicles. Put the headset and the rest of the equipment on and you are in whichever world you picked. This is the winter plan that turns everyone into a child again.
In the snow
Have you thought about taking your friends away for a weekend? If so, here are a couple of ideas for making the most of it; and if not, put it to them.
A weekend will do, or a long one — the early-December bank holiday, or Christmas.
Two activities: skiing and snowboarding. The crown jewels of winter. Do one or both — the medium is the same and so is the point, which is moving across snow. There is a good deal in it: the exercise, being somewhere else entirely, and the view from the mountains.
The only requirement is that you like snow. After that it is a question of skis, for the traditional, or a board, for anyone with more of a surfer in them. Do take warm clothes: the cold does not forgive, and we would rather it did not spoil the day.
Taking the children to the snow
If there is one thing adults and children agree on at this time of year it is snow, which is genuinely magic for the youngest.
Since it is the middle of winter, make the most of it: go up a mountain, or to a resort with the children. Get all the warm clothing out, because wherever you go it will be cold, and prepare to be hit by snowballs thrown by your own children, who will not hesitate.
You almost certainly You will have a very good time, and the memories to go with it. If the snowballs do not finish you off, you can slide down the slopes, lie down and see who makes the best angel, or build snowmen and see whose is best.
It will be a very good day for parents and children alike.
Other ideas for a winter weekend
If none of the above appeals, there are a couple more. Winter may bring worse weather and more cold, but it also brings an atmosphere of its own, which a good many people love. And with it come winter landscapesthat look nothing like they do in summer, and that are considerably better for it.
So we would suggest a day out or a walk. Put either of them together with a winter atmosphere and you get twice as much out of them. Walking through a wood in summer is not the same as walking through it in winter — the ground itself is different. In fact one of the great winter plans is walking up a hill on New Year’s Eve, for the landscape and for what the climb up the Gorbea, or another Basque hill, means.
Both of them work with friends or with children , at any age, and both get you out of the city and away from the routine into somewhere completely different.
