Takeshi’s Castle returns, this time on Amazon Prime Video

Contents

Who does not remember Takeshi’s Castle? The programme that kept a good many of us at the table after lunch, and that was very good company while it lasted.

Well, given how well a Wipeout-style obstacle coursehave done, Amazon Prime Video has decided to give the programme a second life… but let us take this challenge by challenge.

What was Takeshi’s Castle?

A programme that ran through the1990s and 2000s and defined an era of family afternoons.

Contestants had to get through a series of challenges laid out as a gymkhana, testing their skill and their nerve, to reach Takeshi’s castle, where a million yen waited for the winner.

Though if we are honest the point was the opposite: the more falls and the harder the knocks, the funnier it was.

Some of the names will come straight back: Takeshi Kitano, General Tani and, in Spain, Chino Cudeiro.

And of course the challenges themselves: the maze, the stepping stones, the cannons and the sumo bout, among a great many others.

With all of that, the falls and the knocks were guaranteed — and so were the laughs.

Now the platform is expected to bring back a format that worked extremely well the first time.

Amazon Prime backs the format

Amazon has decided to increase its investment in Japan and back a new run of original Japanese programmes, widening what it offers and betting on quality.

Among them is anew version of the programme that marked several generations. So it is official: Takeshi’s Castle returns in 2023 on Amazon Prime Video and will be shown in up to 240 countries.

Take on the challenges yourself

A great many people watching the original wanted to try this kind of gymkhana themselves, and the announcement will have brought that back. Fair enough: doing it with family, friends or colleagues is a guaranteed good day.

You can do it now thanks to companies across Spain that give the challenges their own twist , as we like them at GoRandom
