What to do in Almaty and how to get around by metro

Almaty has one metro line, eleven stations and a four-thousand-metre mountain range starting at the end of the avenue. It is the only city on this list where you can have breakfast in a café and be skiing two hours later.

One line, eleven stations and a city on a grid

The Almaty metro opened in 2011 and it is small: one line, eleven stations, on an axis crossing the city from north-east to south-west. The stations are spectacular — marble, mosaics, worked lighting — because they were designed in the Soviet tradition even though they were finished twenty years later.

With a single line, the metro solves part of the trip and not all of it. For the rest there is a dense, cheap bus network using the same card.

The city is laid out on a grid and on a slope: the mountains are always to the south, so orienting yourself is surprisingly easy. “Up” is south, towards the Tian Shan; “down” is north, towards the steppe.

And what really defines Almaty is right on that southern edge: Medeu and Shymbulak, the high-altitude skating rink and the ski resort, half an hour by bus from the centre.

Seven things to do, and how to reach each one

Almaty is enjoyed at street level and in the mountains. These seven split between the two.

1
Medeu and Shymbulak, in the same day
Medeu is the highest ice rink in the world, at 1,691 metres, and from there a cable car climbs to Shymbulak, properly in the mountains, at 3,200 at the top station. It works in any season and it is the best thing about the city by a distance.
sin metro
Bus 12 from the centre to Medeu, about 30–40 minutes.
2
Panfilov Park and Zenkov cathedral
A wooden Orthodox cathedral from 1907, yellow and pink, built without a single nail and which survived the 1911 earthquake when almost everything else fell. Around it, a huge park with the war memorial and chess players.
L1
Zhibek Zholy — Ten minutes east on foot from the station.
3
The Green Bazaar
Kok Bazaar: mountains of dried fruit, cured horse, kumis, honey and steppe cheeses, in a Soviet-era hall. You taste everything before buying and it is the best place to understand the country's food.
L1
Zhibek Zholy — Five minutes on foot. It is the commercial hub of the city.
4
Going down just to see the stations
Auezov Theatre, Baikonur — dedicated to the cosmodrome, with a space mosaic — and Almaly are among the most ornate stations built anywhere this century. One ticket sees them all: you do not have to exit to change platform.
L1
Baikonur — The whole line is eleven stations: twenty minutes end to end.
5
Up Kok-Tobe by cable car
The hill above the city, with a cable car from the centre, a viewpoint, a quiet park and the best panorama of the Tian Shan over the rooftops. At sunset, with the mountains lit, is the hour.
L1
Abay — Fifteen minutes on foot to the lower cable-car station.
6
The Arbat and pedestrian Panfilov street
The pedestrian axis where the city comes out: pavement cafés, musicians, bookshops and a surprisingly good third-wave coffee scene. It is where you see that Almaty is far younger than you expect.
L1
Almaly — The station comes out practically on the pedestrian stretch.
7
Big Almaty Lake
A turquoise lake at 2,511 metres, ringed by peaks, an hour from the city. It is the landscape people associate with Kazakhstan and it is surprisingly close. You need a hired taxi or a tour: there is no public transport.
sin metro
Half a day. It is a mountain road and in winter it can be closed.

And the adventure we run here

Everything above you can do on your own with this page open. This other thing we build for you: the same idea as always — you do not know what you got until the day before — applied to Almaty.

GO RED
Up into the Tian Shan, with no idea where you end up
The Go Red version of Almaty climbs into the range. We pick you up at a metro station and from there we open the plan: it could be a traverse through the valleys above Medeu, it could be ski touring if the season allows, it could be a horseback route across the high plateaus. You find out the day before.
  • The activity, booked and set up
  • Transfer from the city
  • Kit and insurance
  • A meeting point with a metro stop
Flights and accommodation are not included — you book those. When you pick your departure city we send you a rough estimate of what they cost. We are not a travel agency. How the process works, step by step.

You choose where you fly from and where you are going, and we tell you what the adventure costs and roughly what getting there would cost. Flights and accommodation you book yourself: we are not a travel agency and we do not want to be.

How the transport works, in four numbers

Flat fare and a single card — the Onay — for metro, bus and tram. It does not depend on distance.

Ride with an Onay card
120 ₸
The same price whether you go one station or eleven. The reduced fare — school pupils, students and pensioners — is 60 ₸.
Paying by phone
120 ₸
The Onay app lets you pay by QR or NFC for the same price. The easiest way if you do not want to buy the physical card.
Hours
06:20 – 00:00
Every day. A generous window for a single-line network.
What it does NOT cover
the mountains
Medeu, Shymbulak and Big Almaty Lake are outside the network: a city bus for the first and a taxi or tour for the rest.
Source: Onay and Almaty Metro, via our Almaty metro guide. Checked on 01 September 2026.

The Onay is bought at any station and also works on bus 12, which is the one up to Medeu. With that sorted, the rest of the trip is trivial.

If you want it line by line — which stations each one has, what is around every stop and how to work out a specific journey — we have all of it at our guide to the Almaty metro. It is one of the sites we publish ourselves, and it is free.

From the airport to the centre

Almaty airport is about fifteen kilometres north of the centre and has no metro.

Bus 92
city fare
40–50 min
Runs from the airport to the centre for very little, paying with an Onay card. With light luggage and in daylight it is perfectly reasonable.
Taxi or Yandex Go
variable
25–35 min
Yandex Go works well here and is cheap. Book it in the app rather than negotiating at the arrivals door.
Many flights to Almaty land in the small hours. If that is you, the bus does not always fit: check the timetable and otherwise use the app.

Four things you will be glad you knew

The mountains really are half an hour away
It is not a figure of speech: from the centre you reach 1,700 metres on a city bus. Give it a whole day and take warm clothes even if it is sunny down below.
The alphabet is changing
Kazakhstan is moving from Cyrillic to Latin script, so both appear on signs. In the metro the names are usually given in Latin too.
Autumn is the best season
September and October: clear days, mild temperatures and the city trees in colour. Winter is cold and snowy — good for skiing — and summer is dry and hot.
It is not the capital
The capital has been Astana since 1997. Almaty is still the largest city and the more interesting one to visit, but it is worth knowing before sorting out any paperwork.

Frequently asked questions

Three. One for the city — Panfilov Park, the bazaar, Kok-Tobe — one for Medeu and Shymbulak and a third for Big Almaty Lake or the Charyn canyon, three hours away.

120 tenge a ride with an Onay card or paying by QR or NFC in the app, whatever the distance. The reduced fare is 60 ₸.

No. The metro does not climb the mountain: you get to Medeu on bus 12 from the centre, about 30–40 minutes, and continue by cable car to Shymbulak.

Citizens of the European Union can enter without a visa for short tourist stays. Confirm the current conditions for your nationality before travelling.

Almaty, without hesitation, for a trip. Astana is the capital and has striking architecture, but Almaty has the mountains next door, more street life and a good deal more to do.

And if you fancy being surprised?

This is what we do when we travel. The other thing we do is build adventures where you do not know which activity you got until the day before.
