What to do at Halloween

Contents

Know what you are doing for Halloween? At GoRandom we have the plan — for you, for your friends or for the whole family. And a few ideas on what to do at Halloween so that it is both frightening and enjoyable.

The Halloween comes out of Celtic culture, but it has spread across the world, the Basque Country included. On 31 October children and adults alike put on the most frightening costume they can find, and it is a very good excuse to get together.

The children go round the neighbourhood with the famous “trick or treat”. It is one of the best days of their year, and one where everyone gets to be inventive.

Here is more on Halloween and some suggestions for making it one you remember.

What to do at Halloween

Halloween parties

Before deciding what to do, a word about the occasion itself. A Halloween party turns on the decoration, the food and, above all, the costume.

But what else defines a Halloween party? Here are the features that explain how far the celebration has come. All of this refers to the contemporary version.

The jack-o’-lantern

The name means “Stingy Jack”, and it is central to how a Halloween party is decorated. The name comes from an old Irish story in which Jack was a bad man who, on dying, became a soul in torment.

He was condemned to carry a lantern to light his way as a spirit — which is why Halloween decoration involves pumpkins carved with faces and lit from inside.

We cannot say whether the legend of Stingy Jack is true, but we can say that carving pumpkins is a very good way of getting ready for Halloween.

Trick or treat

This custom is proof that Halloween owes a good part of its popularity to the cinema. Children dress up as something from fiction or from horror and go round the neighbourhood looking for sweets.

Their victims choose between the trick — a prank or a fright — and the treat. Children love it, and they wait for 31 October all year.

Processions

In a good many countries the Halloween celebrations take the form of processions, in which people in costume mark the departure of the dead and pay tribute to their journey.

Mexico is the clearest example, with parades and a good deal else. There is food made specifically for Halloween , and the streets are decorated for it.

Halloween may look somewhat different this year, given the global situation.

Halloween costumes

There is one question about Halloweenthat bothers everyone: which is the best costume? It depends entirely on the person. Children may want their favourite superhero.

Teenagers and adults usually have a clearer goal: the most frightening and the most original costume of the night.

To help you decide, here are some ideas for 31 October.

Squid Game

Certain Netflix series have kept a great many of us in front of a screen, all over the world. If you are looking for costumes for two , this is a good one — the crown jewel of the year’s costumes.

It is a costume that takes rather more work, but it is worth it if you want to be noticed.

For a Squid Game costume you need:

  • a red hooded top;
  • red tracksuit bottoms;
  • black gloves;
  • a black belt.

You can buy the Squid Game mask, or make it: a cheap alternative is a plain white mask painted black.

Once it is dry, draw a white geometric shape on it. Given how popular the series is, this is one of the best costumes of the year.

The Joker

One of the most emblematic characters in cinema, and one of the best Halloween costumes

You need:

  • a yellow shirt;
  • a red jacket;
  • red trousers.

And you can add a themed face mask, which is both original and sensible.

Buy a plain white cloth mask and draw the character’s smile on it.

Halloween face masks

Are there Halloween costumes with face masks? There are, and there is a good deal of invention in them. The point is to enjoy yourself while taking the sensible precautions.

One way of doing both is with a Halloween face mask. The shops have specific designs.

For instance, masks of Freddy Krueger. Or a Catrina. Look at everything available and pick what goes with the costume.

What to do at Halloween

These are years of change, but that is no reason to give up the celebrations we look forward to. Tastes move quickly, and technology is part of that — though the classics are still the classics. So, to the point: what to do at Halloween?

At Gorandom.es there is a wide range of adventures, and everything you need for a Halloween out of the ordinary.

One of them is our special “THIS IS HALLOWEEN” activity, in which we destroy pumpkins as though there were no tomorrow, to get the week out of your system, in the purest style of an anger room. And it puts to use the local farmers’ pumpkins that would otherwise be wasted because they cannot be sold or eaten.

If you want more information about this one, get in touch at [email protected] or through the contact form, and we will be glad to take you through it.

Halloween plans

Another option is our route through the Oma forest. You and your friends get a genuine Random adventure among some very strange painted figures. There are also night kayaktrips, warmly wrapped up, on a spectacular night.

As you know, there are activities of every kind across the three Basque provinces, in case you fancy something a day out over the long weekend. And if you want something specific in Bilbao, read on.

Halloween in Bilbao

If you want something in Bilbao with more technology in it, there is virtual reality. Imagine trying horror games in Virtual reality at Halloween. Can you think of a better date? Spend a rather different day and night on an adventure built for it.

Plans for Halloween

Would you rather something livelier, and a chance to wear that Squid Game costume? Try laser tag in Bilbaor o, or a game of paintball anywhere in the Basque Country.

You come away with the memories, and with a Halloween that held rather more surprises than usual.

Halloween in the Basque Country

If there is one thing that defines Gorandom.es it is the range. Want something enjoyable but calm? Then one of our escape rooms, or other things to do with children at Halloween.

For rather more adrenaline, there are the Go Orange activities — particularly if you prefer to be outdoors, which is also the sensible place to be at the moment.

And if what you want is the full thing, beyond whatever frights the night brings, look at the Go Red section, where the extreme and risk activities are. Tell your friends.
